About UI Green Metrics

Universities Indonesia Green Metrics (UI Green Metrics)

· UI Universitas Indonesia launched a global university rankings in 2010, later known as UI Green-Metric World University Rankings, to measure sustainability efforts on campus. The goal was to create an electronic database to know the sustainability programs and policies of universities around the world.

· The classification of universities was based on the extent to which environmental conservation standards were applied, and the indicators and weights for this classification were designed to be as free of bias as possible. The process of collecting and presenting data is relatively simple and requires little time for raters.

· 95 universities from 35 countries participated in the 2010 edition, consisting of 18 universities from the Americas, 35 universities from Europe, 40 universities from Asia, and two universities from Australia.

· In 2017, it ranked approximately 619 universities from 76 countries around the world. Which makes this classification the first in the world at the level of sustainability.

· All universities in the world that are interested in sustainability issues can participate in the annual UI Green-Metric classifications, as this classification aims to green universities and sustain campuses, and therefore registration is free.

· The best definition of sustainability is to avoid excessive depletion of natural resources in order to maintain environmental balance. In terms of sustainability and its importance in preserving natural resources and environmental balance, the entry of Iraqi universities into the UI Green-Metrics classification is considered an important criterion in preserving the Iraqi environment and the beginning of Iraq’s societal structure keeping pace with the global sustainability revolution. The entry of Iraqi universities into this classification will improve Iraq’s reputation as a sustainable country and positively affect the reputation of Iraqi universities in other international classifications.

This classification aims to improve the reality of universities with regard to sustainability, and the most important things are: -

ü Contribute to spreading academic awareness about sustainability in education and greening the university campus.

ü Promote university-led social change in relation to sustainability goals.

ü Create a self-assessment tool for campus sustainability for higher education institutions around the world.

ü Inform governments, international and local environmental bodies, and the community about sustainability programs on campus.

The classification is based on 6 main criteria concerned with measuring a number of indicators: the work environment and infrastructure on the university campus, energy and climate change, waste management, optimal use of water, and the extent of interest in environmental sustainability in the field of education and its presentation to areas specialized in the environment and sustainable development within its academic programs. In the field of transportation and transportation within the university campus. The percentages are distributed almost equally, and this indicates the importance of all criteria.
